What is Acid reflux?
The contents in stomach are supposed to flow in a way which is down. The Occasion where the acid go backwards that is upwards causes intense burning sensation through food pipe and the throat which is called as Acid reflux.
Stomach acid supposed to go in one direction when acid creeps into places which isn’t supposed to, the body will feel the heat and burning sensation. Acid can burn the tissue and causes a severe irritation, it can be felt like the burning gases coming from stomach to food pipe and towards throat.
What is GERD?
Full form of the GERD is gastroesophageal reflux disease. GERD is a medical term for chronic acid reflux. If the acid reflux happened twice in a week is considered as chronic. The condition of Acid Reflux is temporary but GERD is a permanent one. GERD is caused by mechanical problem, the mechanism in the stomach to keep out the acids from the food pipe isn’t working.
Causes
The esophagus contains a valve which is called lower esophageal sphincter which prevents the stomach acid from entering the esophagus. The Lower esophageal sphincter(LES) is a circular muscle which remain closed, when the intake of food occurs it opens for a while and after the food passes down to the stomach it automatically closes. Acid reflux happens when the LES muscle relax letting stomach acid pass through esophagus and resulting burning sensation in esophagus.
The difference between the causes of acid reflux and GERD is mainly lies in the condition of esophageal sphincter (LES). In the case of acid reflux, the LES muscle relaxes, allowing stomach acid to enter the esophagus. This relaxation happens without the sphincter being weakened and it is a temporary condition. LES will go back to its normal position after an amount of time. In contrast, GERD occurs when the LES is weakened, leading to more frequent muscle relaxation and resulting in intake of acid from the stomach causing severe discomfort through the food pipe.
There are many factors resulting in the weakening of LES, some of the causes are listed below:
Hiatal Hernia: It occurs when the stomach pushes through a hole in the diaphragm where the esophagus passes, causing stomach acids to enter the esophagus resulting in sever discomfort
Pregnancy: Pregnancy is a common cause for temporary acid influx. It occurs as a result of the pressure and volume inside the stomach can push, stretch and weaken the muscles in the diaphragm and open the LES resulting in the entry of stomach acid’s entry into the stomach causing the condition.
Obesity: Obesity can increase the proximity factor for causing this condition similar to pregnancy it increase the volume of the abdomen and bring increase pressure in the diaphragm causing stretching and relaxation of the LES muscle resulting in entry on stomach acids in esophagus.
Smoking: smoking results in the relaxation of LES. Which will eventually cause the LES muscle to relax more often. Another issue with smoking is it will trigger coughing resulting in opening of LES damaging LES.
Birth Defect: Birth defect like esophageal atresia which adversely affect the development of esophagus in a baby will result in acid reflux and GERD.
SYMPTOMS of Acid reflux and GERD
Backwash: After the intake of food , it can be felt like the food is backwashed into your throat from stomach. It is a very irritable sensation through the food pipe.
Burning: A burning sensation can be felt all through the food pipe till your throat.
Chest pain: Individuals will also feel pain in esophagus it can trigger some nerves related to heart related pain.
Nausea: You may feel nauseous or lose your appetite due to acid overflow or backwash.
Sore throat: When the acid is raised in the throat will result in sore throat. The swallowing of food will feel like a difficult job because there is a sensation of lump in the throat.
Risk of occurrence of GERD on Babies
Risk of babies to develop the condition for GERD is less. GERD is usually related to feeding. But risk will increase for the babies who are born pre maturely or with any condition which affects esophagus.
Symptoms of GERD in Babies.
- too much fussiness.
- difficulty falling asleep.
- not eating.
- brief spells of vomiting.
- Hoarseness or wheezing.
- Bad breath
Complications
Long term presence of inflammation in esophagus will result in following consequences:
Inflammation of tissues: stomach acid is a potential corrosive agent. It can damage the tissues that are present in esophagus causing inflammation and bleeding often resulting in ulcer.
Narrowing of the esophagus: It is also called as esophageal stricture. Due to the formation of scar tissue, caused by the damage of lower esophagus, esophagus will get narrowed and there arises the difficulty in swallowing.
Risk of cancer: Damage from stomach acids can be severe, leading to changes in the tissue lining of the esophagus. This can activate oncogenes or inactivate tumor-suppressing genes, increasing the risk of developing esophageal cancer.
