Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever)

Types

There are two types of allergic rhinitis:

1. Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis: Seasonal allergies usually occur during the spring and fall season and are typically in response to outdoor allergens like pollen.
2. Perennial Allergic Rhinitis: Perennial allergies can occur year round, or at any time during the year in response to indoor substances, like dust mites and pet dander.

Common Symptoms

Causes

When your body comes into contact with an allergen, it releases histamine, which is a natural chemical that defends your body from the allergen. This chemical can cause Allergic Rhinitis and its symptoms, including a runny nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes.

Other types of rhinitis

Non-allergic rhinitis: Non-allergic rhinitis is inflammation of nasal tissues that results in sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, or postnasal drip. 

Gustatory rhinitis: Gustatory rhinitis is characterized by the acute beginning of watery or mucoid rhinorrhea provoked by the ingestion of hot and spicy food. 

Atrophic rhinitis: Atrophic rhinitis is characterized by crusting, obstruction, halitosis, purulent discharge, dryness, and epistaxis. Nasal mucosa and glandular atrophy are prominent in primary atrophic rhinitis, which mainly affects people living in dry, warm climate areas.

Vasomotor Rhinitis: Vasomotor Rhinitis is often triggered by factors like chemical irritants, cleaning agents, and environmental status such as temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure.

Infectious Rhinitis: Infectious Rhinitis is caused by viral rather than bacterial agents.

Occupational Rhinitis: Occupational rhinitis is associated with nasal symptoms such as congestion, rhinorrhea, nasal itching, and sneezing, following exposure to specific agents in the workplace.
